CAMTA 1

Synonyms: Calmodulin-binding transcription activator 1, CANPMR

by Jan Klos

Background

It is a calmodulin-binding transcription activator 1 coded by the gene with the same name CAMTA1. It functions as calcium sensitive regulator of gene expression. In normal conditions the expressions is found in central nervous system (cerebellum, midbrain, pons and medulla). The fusion of WWTR1–CAMTA1 gene as a result of translocation 1p36.3 and 3q25 is found in majority of cases of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. This translocation leads to overexpression of CAMTA 1 protein.

Expression in tumors

Positive staining is seen in about 90% cases of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. Only limited and weak nuclear reactivity is reported in a few cases of Kaposi`s sarcoma and single cases of other tumors (breast carcinoma NOS).

Staining pattern

Staining pattern is nuclear.

Application

  • Confirming diagnosis of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma.
